The South African Child Gauge is the only publication in the country that provides an annual snap-shot of the status of South Africa’s children.
The present study aimed to evaluate and discuss the appropriateness of institutions caring for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) in the face of HIV/AIDS through a systematic literature review.
This study has, through an immense literature review analysis explored: the role of OVC care institutions; policy environment of care and protection of OVCs; care of OVCs in institutional care in both South Africa and Botswana; and the experiences of OVCs in care institutions.

The present study, through an extensive review of literature has explored and reconceptualised institutional care and considered the dynamics of institutionalization. This article presents results from a quasi-experimental study in South Africa examining differences in grant uptake over a two year period among 1487 children enrolled in one of two types of supportive home visiting programming: volunteer-based or paraprofessional.
This conference is being organised by leaders in the field: Keeping Children Safe, Plan International, Save the Children, Terre des Hommes, UNICEF Nigeria, USAID and War Child. Participation is sought from across Africa and from international experts.
